Taurus Systems Unveils KASOM Missile at ADEX 2025
Taurus Systems introduced its latest advancement in missile technology, the KASOM (Korean Advanced Stand Off Missile), during the Seoul International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition (ADEX) 2025, held from October 17 to 24. This new cruise missile is designed for integration into the future variant of the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) KF-21 ‘Boromae’ fighter as well as the KAI FA-50 light combat aircraft.
Key Features and Specifications
-
Size and Weight:
- The KASOM measures 4 meters in length and has a width of 950 mm, making it more compact compared to the existing KEPD 350 missile.
- The missile’s weight has been reduced to 2,000 lbs (approximately 970 kg), significantly lighter than the KEPD 350, which weighs 3,086 lbs (1,400 kg).
-
Performance:
- The KASOM maintains an operational speed of Mach 0.6 to 0.95, similar to that of its predecessor, the KEPD 350.
Program Development
A company representative described the KASOM initiative as a continuation of the prior KEPD 350K-2 project, which was geared towards enhancing all-weather operational capabilities. This earlier version was intended for integration with light and short-range fighters, like the FA-50.
Integration with KAI KF-21EX
Though KAI has yet to officially disclose detailed specifications regarding the internal armament bay of the future KF-21EX (Extended) variant, insights indicate that its dimensions will likely mirror those of the weapons bay in the Lockheed Martin F-35A. This compatibility may enhance the KASOM’s deployment efficacy and the overall combat utility of the KF-21EX.
Strategic Implications
The introduction of the KASOM missile underscores the growing strategic capabilities of South Korea in the realm of advanced aerial combat systems. With the focus shifting towards next-generation combat platforms, the missile’s integration possibilities could signify a leap forward in South Korea’s defense posture, particularly in standoff capabilities crucial for modern warfare.
In summary, the KASOM missile represents a significant advancement in missile technology for both the KF-21 and FA-50 platforms, providing enhanced operational flexibility and precision strike capabilities for the Republic of Korea’s defense forces.
