Denmark Expands Procurement of Carl-Gustaf M4 Recoilless Rifles

Denmark Enhances Defense Capabilities with New Carl-Gustaf M4 Recoilless Rifles

Acquisition Overview

The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has officially confirmed a new procurement of Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifles. This acquisition, announced on November 12 in collaboration with Saab, illustrates Denmark’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its military capabilities amidst evolving operational demands.

Financial Details

The contract, valued at SEK 510 million (approximately USD 54.3 million), encompasses not only the recoilless rifles but also essential ammunition and training support. DALO has indicated that financing for this procurement will be sourced from the Danish Defence Agreement, emphasizing its strategic alignment with national defense priorities. Deliveries are anticipated to commence towards the end of 2025 and will extend through 2028, ensuring a gradual infusion of enhanced capabilities into the Danish Army and Home Guard.

Operational Enhancements

DALO underscored that the integration of the Carl-Gustaf M4 will significantly bolster the ability of both ground forces to engage armored vehicles and personnel, whether under concealment or in the open. The adaptability and reusability of the Carl-Gustaf system, as noted by Saab, make it a versatile asset for modern warfare scenarios.

Historical Context

Denmark’s relationship with the Carl-Gustaf system dates back to the 1970s, when the country first adopted it as the Dysekanon (DYKN). The latest acquisition of the Carl-Gustaf M4 serves as a direct successor to the DYKN M/85, which was phased out earlier in 2022. This transition underscores Denmark’s commitment to maintaining contemporary systems that meet current and future combat requirements.

Implications for Defense Strategy

  • The Carl-Gustaf M4 enhances Denmark’s multi-role capabilities in ground engagements.
  • Increased firepower capability will address contemporary threats from both armored units and infantry in diverse environments.
  • Training provisions coupled with the procurement will ensure that personnel are operationally prepared for deployment.

Denmark’s proactive acquisition strategy aligns with broader trends in defense modernization, highlighting a focus on flexibility and effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
