China Conducts Live-Fire Exercise with Vehicle-Launched Loitering Munitions

China’s Advancement in Loitering Munition Technology

Overview of Recent Developments

On October 27, 2023, China conducted a live-fire evaluation of a truck-mounted, canister-launched loitering munition, suggesting imminent operational deployment. The test was executed by the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command (ETC), which is strategically positioned in Nanjing, near the eastern coast of China.

Test Details

Footage released by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) depicted the loitering munition being deployed from a 6×6 launch vehicle equipped with six launch containers. Notably, the munition is initially propelled by a rocket booster and subsequently sustained by a pusher propeller.

Key features of the loitering munition include:

  • Mid-mounted double delta wing configuration: This design enhances maneuverability and stability.
  • Control surfaces: The munition is equipped with full-span elevons, tip-mounted fins, and rudders for accurate flight path adjustments.
  • Retractable side-force panels: Positioned in each wing, these panels further augment flight control and performance.

Potential System Identification

While CCTV did not specify the exact designation of the loitering munition, it may represent an upgraded variant of the ASN-301 anti-radiation loitering munition. This system, developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), was first showcased at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in 2017, also mounted on a similar 6×6 launcher platform.

AVIC characterized the ASN-301 as a “mobile anti-radiation drone system,” intended for long-range engagements to neutralize enemy radar installations during conflict scenarios.

Strategic Implications

The introduction of advanced loitering munitions into China’s inventory indicates a significant leap in modern warfare capabilities. These systems possess the potential to:

  • Enhance strike accuracy against high-value targets.
  • Supplement electronic warfare efforts by targeting enemy radar systems.
  • Provide a flexible response option that can be deployed in a variety of combat environments.

This development raises questions regarding regional security dynamics and the responses from neighboring nations who may view these advancements as a direct threat to their operational security.

Final Thoughts

The ongoing evolution of loitering munition technology by China reflects a broader trend in military modernization efforts. As these systems become operational, they will likely have profound implications for strategic military planning and defense policy in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Defense analysts will need to closely monitor the deployment and integration of such technologies to adequately assess their impact on global security frameworks.
