Anduril Australia Launches Manufacturing Facility for Ghost Shark XL-AUV
Anduril Australia has inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility in Sydney dedicated to the production of its Ghost Shark extra-large autonomous underwater vehicle (XL-AUV). This initiative underscores a significant advancement in the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) operational capabilities.
Initiation of Production
The manufacturing program for the Ghost Shark has commenced with low-rate initial production, with plans to transition to full-scale production by 2026. This information was announced by Anduril Australia on October 31.
- Contract Value: In September, Anduril secured a contract valued at AUD 1.7 billion (approximately USD 1.1 billion) from the Australian Department of Defence (DoD). The agreement stipulates the delivery of a specified number of Ghost Sharks over a five-year horizon.
- Operational Role: The Ghost Shark XL-AUV is designed to enhance the RAN’s capabilities in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and strike operations.
Progress and Milestones
Anduril Australia has successfully completed the first unit of the Ghost Shark, which is now prepared for sea acceptance trials. Delivery to the RAN is projected for January 2026.
Facility Features and Capabilities
The new facility spans 7,400 square meters and is equipped for the advanced production of the Ghost Shark. Notable features include:
- Robotic Manufacturing: Incorporation of sophisticated robotic systems for high-efficiency production.
- AI-Driven Logistics: Utilization of artificial intelligence for optimizing supply chain processes.
- Custom Test Tank: A specialized tank for the in-water verification of buoyancy, electrical systems, and safety protocols prior to sea trials.
Export Capabilities
Additionally, the facility will manufacture the commercial baseline variant of the Ghost Shark, known as Dive-XL. With government approval, this model is eligible for export to allied military forces.
- Modular Design: Dive-XL is a versatile platform capable of carrying multiple payloads:
- Payload Options: It can accommodate three standard payloads or one large payload, enabling applications in strike missions, communications, or ISR operations.
- Extended Operation: Designed for prolonged underwater operation, Dive-XL can function for weeks without the need for surfacing or intervention.
Local Economic Impact
Anduril Australia has committed to sourcing components and materials from over 40 Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs), thereby contributing to local economic growth and fostering innovation within the defense sector.
This facility marks a pivotal development in Australia’s defense industry, positioning the nation to advance its autonomous maritime capabilities through domestic production and international collaboration. The strategic implications for the RAN and the broader Asia-Pacific security environment cannot be overstated.
