Windracers Enhances Payload Capacity and Range of Ultra UAS

Introduction to Windracers’ Ultra UAS
UK-based unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) manufacturer Windracers is advancing its Ultra heavy-lift UAS capabilities, recently announcing an increase in payload capacity from 150 kg to 200 kg, alongside an extended operational range that will double from 1,000 km to 2,000 km. This enhancement was detailed by Windracers CEO Simon Muderack during an interview on October 28.

Upcoming Upgrades
The modifications to the Ultra UAS are expected to be implemented in the forthcoming months. Currently, the system is powered by dual combustion engines, each delivering around 50 horsepower. Muderack emphasized the limitations of electric power sources for such extensive ranges and heavy loads, stating:

“To achieve that distance and payload capacity, you’re not looking at an electric power source, at least not at this stage.”

Windracers’ approach involves utilizing industrial engines that are readily available in the market, allowing for straightforward maintenance and quick replacements to minimize downtime.

Adaptability and Robust Design
The Ultra UAS is engineered for operations in challenging terrains. Notably, in 2024, it was successfully deployed in the Antarctic, affirming its rugged capability. Muderack elucidated the design philosophy behind the Ultra:

“We aimed to create ‘the Jeep of the skies’ or a ‘Toyota Hilux-type platform’—extremely durable and robust, primarily constructed from aluminum.”

Approximately 90% of the aircraft’s structure is composed of aluminum, enhancing its resilience. The UAS has demonstrated impressive durability, as observed by Muderack when it was mishandled, yet remained operational:

“I’ve witnessed the platform collide with a snowbank and bump into a hangar. Remarkably, it endured those impacts, and after some minor repairs with a hammer, it continued to function reliably.”
