Thailand Signs Agreement to Become Launch Customer for Airbus MRTT+

Royal Thai Air Force Enters New Era with MRTT+ Acquisition from Airbus

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has entered into a significant procurement agreement with Airbus for an advanced version of the A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT). This strategic move marks Thailand as the inaugural customer for the newly launched MRTT Plus (MRTT+), positioning the RTAF to enhance its aerial refueling capabilities for the first time.

Contract Details

  • Aircraft Specifications: The RTAF’s contract includes a singular MRTT+, derived from the A330-800neo platform. This aircraft will be powered by twin Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and feature both boom and hose-and-drogue refueling systems. Additional functionalities include a VVIP cabin and a medical evacuation kit.

  • Timeline: The delivery of the aircraft is scheduled for 2029 after undergoing military conversion at Airbus’s A330 MRTT Centre in Getafe, Spain, beginning in 2026.

  • Financial Aspects: While the contract value remains undisclosed, it is estimated to be around THB 12 billion (approximately USD 372 million).

Operational Intentions

According to an RTAF spokesperson, the initial operational base for the MRTT+ will be Wing 6, located at Don Mueang Air Base in Bangkok. Plans are already underway to expand the RTAF’s air-to-air refueling capabilities with additional acquisitions, although new purchases will not be pursued immediately.

  • Operational Strategy:
    • Initial deployment from Wing 6.
    • Future expansion of the AAR fleet planned, though on a timeline yet to be established.

Industry Collaboration and Offset Agreements

In connection with the MRTT+ acquisition, the RTAF is prioritizing partnerships with local industry to ensure effective maintenance and sustainability of the aircraft. The spokesperson elaborated on the ongoing dialogue with Airbus regarding specific offset arrangements to support these goals.

  • Key Points on Offsets:
    • Focus on Thai industry capabilities for aircraft maintenance.
    • Upcoming negotiations between RTAF and Airbus to finalize offset details.

This procurement not only enhances the RTAF’s operational capabilities but also symbolizes a commitment to domestic industry participation in defense initiatives, thereby strengthening Thailand’s broader aerospace ecosystem. As the RTAF prepares for the future, the MRTT+ acquisition signifies a pivotal advancement in enhancing its logistical and operational capacities.
