Enhancement of French Navy’s Navigation Systems
The French Navy’s Fleet Support Service (SSF) is spearheading an initiative to modernize the navigation systems onboard the PHA-class amphibious helicopter carriers. Assigned to complete this vital upgrade, CNN MCO, the designated fleet support contractor since 2022, will oversee enhancements across three key vessels: the Mistral, Tonnerre, and Dixmude, as well as provide in-service support for the Somme BCR-class command and replenishment vessel. This modernization effort aims to bolster operational readiness and ensure these platforms can effectively meet the challenges of a dynamic strategic milieu.
Addressing System Obsolescence
In response to the gradual aging of critical systems, the contract encompasses over 40 modernization studies. Conducted across the aforementioned vessels, these investigations have already translated into 50 distinct upgrades within a remarkably short span of two years. CNN MCO is executing these phases in tightly coordinated collaboration with the SSF, guiding the projects from preliminary design assessments to seamless shipboard integration.
Advancing Autonomous Navigation Amid Emerging Threats
In an era characterized by hybrid conflict scenarios and increasing interference with radionavigation systems, the French Navy is intensifying its focus on enhancing the autonomy and reliability of its navigational capabilities. The TopAxyz inertial navigation system, developed by Thales, operates independently of external signals. By utilizing onboard sensors—such as accelerometers and gyroscopes—this system continuously determines the vessel’s position, velocity, and heading, effectively eliminating the reliance on external inputs like GPS.
- Proven Track Record: With more than 40 years of operational expertise, these systems have amassed over 50 million operational hours across diverse applications including space exploration, civil and military aviation, and ground platforms.
- Enhanced Security Features: The technology includes functionalities for detecting spoofing and jamming attempts, allowing the Navy to navigate with heightened precision and discretion in critical areas.
Tailoring Navigation Systems for Operational Demands
Within this initiative, CS GROUP, a subsidiary of Sopra Steria, contributes its extensive knowledge in navigation system integration. The inertial navigation units from Thales will be embedded within CS Group’s comprehensive navigation framework. A warship’s navigation system is fundamental for accurate positioning and maneuvering safety, making this technological collaboration essential for providing reliability, resilience, and continuity of service in the most demanding maritime settings.
CS GROUP’s background spans over 15 years, during which the firm has honed its capabilities in integrating navigation sensors and developing resilient, cyber-secure data distribution networks for navigation.
Streamlined Integration and Maintenance Rollout
The integration of these state-of-the-art navigation systems is synchronized with the SSF’s maintenance schedule and is expected to continue through 2027. The Mistral is set to be the inaugural vessel to receive the modernized system, with subsequent installations planned for the Dixmude and Tonnerre. After CS Group incorporates the Thales inertial units into the navigation modules, CNN MCO will take charge of the installations, maintaining a progressive approach that aligns with the established timeline.
CNN MCO’s responsibilities include integration, testing oversight, and equipment upkeep, working in direct liaison with SSF teams. The primary objective is to optimize installation opportunities, thereby ensuring the operational readiness of the navigation systems.
Statements from Key Stakeholders
Céline Barazer, Deputy Director of CNN MCO, stated: “This initiative underlines our capability to execute complex upgrades within naval environments. We take pride in contributing to the modernization of essential equipment on these vessels as part of a strictly French endeavor, collaborating closely with the SSF, Thales, and CS Group.”
Florent Chauvancy, Vice-President of Flight Avionics at Thales, remarked: “With four decades of experience in inertial navigation for varied applications, we are now channeling this expertise into naval operations. We are honored to contribute to the provision of resilient navigation solutions that are vital for enabling operational freedom for France’s maritime forces.”
Frédéric Dussart, Director of Defence & Security Activities at CS Group, noted: “By collaborating with CNN MCO and Thales on a wholly French solution, we underscore the significance of national expertise in service to the French Navy. As a long-standing partner of naval forces, CS Group is committed to enhancing fleet safety and performance through cohesive and resilient navigation integration.”
This comprehensive modernization of navigation systems signifies the French Navy’s commitment to maintaining operational superiority in an evolving security environment, ensuring its vessels can operate effectively in any challenge they may face at sea.
