Spanish Navy NH90 Helicopter Delivery Schedule
The Spanish Navy (Armada) has announced a definitive schedule for the delivery of its remaining NHIndustries (NHI) NH90 Multi-Role Support Transport (MSPT) helicopters. This logistical planning occurs in tandem with Spain’s prospective procurement of NH90 Spain (HSPN) helicopters.
Delivery Timeline
As of December 12, the Armada confirmed its expectations regarding the receipt of the remaining MSPT helicopters:
- Three helicopters are slated for delivery by the end of 2025.
- Four additional helicopters will arrive in 2026.
The MSPT variant combines elements of the NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) and the Troop Transport Helicopter (TTH) configurations of the NH90 series.
The official statement from the Armada noted:
“The Spanish Navy anticipates the imminent arrival of its third NH90, contributing to the fleet augmentation aimed at enhancing operational and technological capabilities. Our plan is to receive three helicopters in 2025 and four in 2026.”
Current Status of MSPT Deliveries
Recent communications from NHI President Axel Aloccio indicate that three MSPT helicopters have already been delivered to the Armada:
- Two units were delivered in May.
- The third was delivered in July.
These helicopters are undergoing final inspections prior to their formal acceptance into active service, showcasing the operational readiness of these assets.
Aloccio remarked during a media engagement on October 14 at the Airbus Helicopters facility in Marignane:
“The Spanish Navy is reportedly satisfied with the delivered helicopters. With seven units on order, this initial success may facilitate a subsequent HSPN NFH contract in the upcoming years—the goal is firmly in sight.”
Future Outlook: HSPN Helicopter Acquisition
The prospective acquisition of the NH90 Spain (HSPN) helicopters is significant for the Armada. This anticipated order is expected to enhance the Navy’s operational capabilities and strength. The HSPN variant, designed to meet specific Spanish requirements, signifies a continued commitment to modernizing and expanding naval aviation capabilities.
By establishing a structured delivery timeline for the MSPT helicopters and considering the strategic addition of the HSPN units, the Armada is poised to enhance its fleet’s multipurpose functionality and interoperability within NATO frameworks.
This development highlights the importance of integrating advanced helicopter technologies to address contemporary defense challenges. As Spain progresses on this acquisition journey, the operational implications for both national defense and broader collective security efforts within the NATO alliance will be closely monitored.
