South Korea Advances Airborne Early Warning and Control Capabilities
Procurement Overview
The Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) has successfully engaged L3Harris Technologies for the procurement of four modified Bombardier Global 6500 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. This significant contract, valued over USD 2.26 billion (EUR 1.94 billion), was announced on 20 October 2025.

L3Harris is collaborating with several key partners to deliver these advanced platforms, including:

- Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) – through its subsidiary, ELTA Systems
- Korean Air
The delivery timeline for these AEW&C aircraft is projected between 2030 and 2032, underscoring a commitment to bolster Korea’s defense capabilities in the face of evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Éric Martel, the President and CEO of Bombardier, expressed satisfaction that the Global 6500 model will play a crucial role in defending Korean airspace alongside L3Harris’s technology. He pointed out that amid increasing geopolitical tensions, this platform stands out as the preferred choice for governmental entities aiming to modernize their defense systems.
IAI’s Innovations
Boaz Levy, President and CEO of IAI, discussed the innovative features of the aircraft, highlighting its integration of advanced technologies such as compact sensors and sophisticated AESA radar systems. These advancements will enhance detection and classification capabilities, ensuring operational success even in complex environments.
Enhancing National Capabilities
Jin Kyu Lim, head of the Aerospace Division at Korean Air, indicated that the collaboration will not only yield sophisticated aircraft but will also strengthen domestic capabilities in modification, integration, and maintenance for special mission aircraft. This initiative reinforces Korea’s position in the aerospace sector and contributes significantly to national defense.
Future Responsibilities
In addition to aircraft delivery, South Korean industry will play a predominant role in operating and sustaining the AEW&C program. This includes managing future production needs, thereby advancing local defense industry capabilities.
