SDA Engages Commercial Partner for On-Orbit Tactical Satellite Communications Demonstration

AST SpaceMobile Secures Contract for Tactical Satellite Communications Demonstration

The Space Development Agency (SDA) has made a significant stride in enhancing military communications by awarding a $30 million contract to AST SpaceMobile for an on-orbit demonstration focused on commercial tactical satellite communications capabilities. This initiative aligns with the ongoing evolution of defense strategies that leverage commercial space technologies.

Contract Details and Objectives

The contract, structured as an Other Transaction Agreement, falls under SDA’s Hybrid Acquisition for Proliferated Low Earth Orbit (HALO) program. This program is designed to accelerate the integration of commercial technological solutions into defense applications, facilitating swift testing and validation processes.

Key highlights include:

  • Focus on Tactical SATCOM: The agreement targets the validation of high-speed tactical satellite communications (SATCOM) capabilities using AST SpaceMobile’s innovative broadband technologies.
  • SDA Vendor Pool: This contract marks the first award to a vendor from the HALO vendor pool established in 2024, which comprises 19 eligible commercial firms poised to support the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA).

Program Specifics

The HALO Europa Track 2 Commercial Solutions program specifically taps into AST SpaceMobile’s expertise. This initiative is part of the broader Tranche 2 Demonstration and Experimentation System (T2DES) project, which aims to enhance the military’s communication and data relay capabilities.

Strategic Importance

Gurpartap “GP” Sandhoo, acting director of SDA, noted the program’s design allows for rapid operationalization of commercial technologies that mitigate risks and improve overall mission utility. This agile approach helps the Pentagon expedite the development of capabilities vital for future military operations.

Demonstration Timeline and Technology

AST SpaceMobile plans to utilize its BlueBird satellite constellation for a series of on-orbit demonstrations expected to conclude by December 2027. This constellation specializes in providing space-based cellular broadband networks that can seamlessly connect to standard smartphones, thus extending coverage to remote regions.

Testing Objectives

The upcoming demonstrations aim to achieve the following:

  • Integration Validation: Testing will focus on the compatibility of tactical military radios with the commercial satellite infrastructure.
  • Service Model Exploration: This effort also seeks to showcase how the Department of Defense can harness commercial space solutions to facilitate data transmission.

Corporate Perspective

AST SpaceMobile’s CEO, Chris Ivory, emphasized that selection for the SDA’s Europa Track 2 program highlights the firm’s capability to rapidly operationalize commercial space solutions for national defense. The firm’s existing low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology is seen as a vital asset that can quickly scale to meet advanced tactical communication needs.

Future Prospects

The SDA indicates plans to issue additional HALO prototype orders to a range of vendors in the coming months, illustrating a growing commitment to incorporate commercial innovations into defense frameworks. This expansion underscores a strategic pivot where commercial and military technologies increasingly intersect, potentially transforming facets of national security.

In summary, the collaboration between the SDA and AST SpaceMobile represents an important step toward integrating commercial capabilities into the U.S. military’s operational framework, enhancing the agility and effectiveness of defense communications in an evolving global landscape.
