Saudi Arabia Expands Naval Capabilities with C-27J Acquisition
Strategic Development in Maritime Patrol
In a significant move to enhance its maritime security, Saudi Arabia has finalized the procurement of four C-27J tactical airlifters, modifying them for dual roles as armed maritime patrol aircraft. This initiative represents the first instance of utilizing the C-27 platform in this capacity, as announced by the manufacturer, Leonardo.
Key Features of the C-27J Acquisition
-
Enhanced Armament: The C-27J aircraft will be equipped to deploy torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and depth charges. A specialized mission suite, complete with advanced sensors, will enable effective tracking of both surface and submerged targets.
-
Versatile Operational Roles: Beyond its maritime duties, the aircraft will support search-and-rescue operations and air drop missions, demonstrating its multifunctional capabilities.
-
Delivery Schedule: The first units are anticipated to be delivered to the Royal Saudi Navy by 2029. This follows Saudi Arabia’s acquisition last summer of two C-27Js designated for firefighting, cargo transport, and medical evacuation.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Leonardo emphasizes the C-27J’s versatility. All maritime-specific mission consoles can be detached, allowing the aircraft to revert to its basic transport configuration. This adaptability offers significant operational flexibility for Saudi maritime forces.
Market Penetration and Global Adoption
To date, Leonardo has delivered 99 C-27Js across 19 nations. The aircraft is engineered as a smaller alternative to the C-130, designed for operations from shorter runways. Although it has seen use in a maritime patrol capacity by the U.S. Coast Guard, this is the first sale focused on its deployment as an armed maritime patrol platform.
Weaponry and Potential Armament
Possible armaments for the Saudi-configured C-27J include:
- MBDA Marte-ER Anti-Ship Missile: A capable weapon for engaging maritime threats.
- MU-90 Lightweight Torpedo: Manufactured by Leonardo’s subsidiary, WASS, and recently the subject of a €200 million deal with Riyadh.
Future Developments and Innovations
Leonardo is also pursuing a special operations variant of the C-27J, known as the MC-27. This model will integrate a side-mounted gun and is projected to be available for sale between 2029 and 2030.
By strengthening its aerial capabilities and integrating advanced technology, Saudi Arabia is making substantial investments aimed at enhancing its national security and expanding its maritime operational reach. This acquisition is indicative of the Kingdom’s broader strategy to modernize its defense apparatus amidst regional dynamics.
