Pentagon Accelerates Sensor Development to Counter Drone Threats

The escalating prominence of small drones poses a multifaceted challenge to the security of military installations in the United States. In response, the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has initiated a program that prioritizes the rapid development and deployment of advanced sensor technologies aimed at detecting these aerial threats.

Urgent Call for Innovative Solutions

The urgency associated with this initiative is underscored by DIU’s announcement seeking capable products for a demonstration scheduled for spring 2026 at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. Companies invited to partake in the demonstration will have a short timeframe—often less than 30 days—from notification to execution, highlighting the immediate need for innovative solutions in counter-drone operations.

  • Primary Objectives:
    • Detection of small drones (Group 1 UAVs) weighing less than 20 pounds at a minimum distance of 2 kilometers.
    • Capability to identify larger drones (Groups 2 and 3) that can weigh up to 1,320 pounds.
    • Robust filtering mechanisms to differentiate between drones, ground clutter, and avian life.

Integrated Deterrence and Defense Strategy

Entitled “Counter UAS Sensing for Homeland and Mobile Defense,” the project aims to facilitate both civil and military security. A critical aspect involves enabling the use of these sensors not just for detection but also for potential engagement with drone targets, which would include seamless integration with existing Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS) fire control mechanisms.

Key requirements outlined in the solicitation include:

  • Mandatory inclusion of radar sensors in all proposed solutions.
  • Capability to operate safely in populated regions and congested airspaces characterized by multiple lawful emitters.

The second focus of the DIU project addresses the need for mobile, counter-drone sensors suitable for small, agile military units. Given recent battlefield experiences, particularly in electronic warfare contexts such as the Ukraine conflict, the need for undetectable systems has become paramount.

    • Early warning capabilities that empower units to undertake protective measures against imminent drone attacks.
    • A low physical and spectral profile to minimize the risk of detection by adversaries.
    • Compatibility with a broad spectrum of radio frequencies (approximately 400 MHz to 8 GHz) to accommodate diverse operational environments.
