Pentagon Selects Six Contractors to Expedite Hypersonic Research and Development

Advancements in Hypersonic Technology: New Contracts from the Joint Hypersonics Transition Office

The U.S. Defense Department’s Joint Hypersonics Transition Office (JHTO) has recently announced the awarding of contracts to six innovative vendors aimed at propelling advancements in hypersonic technology. This strategic initiative underscores the Pentagon’s commitment to enhancing its hypersonic capabilities, critical for modern military operations.

Contract Awards and Objectives

The awarded contracts, structured as Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs), were given to:

  • Leidos
  • GoHypersonic
  • Special Aerospace Services (Aurex)
  • Purdue Applied Research Institute
  • Halo Engines
  • Kratos

These contracts, facilitated through the Strategic and Spectrum Mission Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) framework, aim to drive further development in next-generation hypersonic systems. The National Security Technology Accelerator (NSTXL), a non-profit intermediary that bridges governmental and private-sector collaboration, will oversee the transition of these advanced technologies into operational systems.

Areas of Focus

According to NSTXL, these contractors are expected to contribute to various key domains within hypersonic development, including:

  • In-flight maneuverability: Enhancing the ability of hypersonic vehicles to initiate course corrections during flight.
  • Aerodynamics and propulsion systems: Innovating designs that enable efficient and stable flight.
  • Mission planning: Developing sophisticated algorithms for targeting and trajectory optimization.
  • Overall effectiveness: Ensuring systems deliver operational superiority on the battlefield.

The contractors will engage in both modeling and simulation activities as well as essential ground or flight testing to validate performance metrics.

Financial Overview and Timeline

While specific financial details regarding the OTAs remain undisclosed, preliminary estimates indicate that the total investment across the six awards could reach approximately $68 million. The timeline for this initiative spans three years, with an objective of achieving a flight-ready prototype prior to contract completion.

The Strategic Importance of Hypersonic Missiles

Hypersonic weaponry has emerged as a principal focus within the Pentagon, characterized by its capability to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, while maneuvering to evade enemy defense systems. This technology presents significant challenges for adversaries, as its velocity and agility make detection and interception increasingly difficult.

Each branch of the U.S. military—the Air Force, Army, and Navy—has embarked on separate hypersonics programs, yet they face numerous hurdles in bringing these systems to maturity. Key obstacles include:

To address these issues, the Pentagon established the JHTO in 2020, focusing on the rapid development and operational integration of hypersonic systems. This office collaborates closely with the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division to prioritize research, enhance development strategies, and fast-track technological transitions into functional military applications.
