Shaping the European Framework for Space Activity Sustainability
Overview of the Consultation
This initiative presents a crucial opportunity for industry stakeholders to influence the development of the European framework aimed at assessing the impact and environmental footprint of space operations. Space enterprises and relevant participants are encouraged to review and contribute feedback on the initial draft of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for the space sector (PEFCR4Space). This pivotal document has been crafted by the Technical Secretariat, a diverse consortium comprising industry leaders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), scientific specialists, and representatives from governmental bodies.
Consultation Deadline: 1 December 2025
Understanding PEFCR4Space
The PEFCR4Space initiative, spearheaded by the European Commission, is focused on establishing a standardized methodology for evaluating and mitigating environmental repercussions specific to the space sector. This framework employs a thorough life cycle assessment (LCA) to guarantee results that are trustworthy, consistent, and verifiable. The PEFCR4Space is designed to:
- Combat greenwashing
- Simplify assessment processes, thereby reducing associated costs
- Facilitate equitable, performance-based evaluations of environmental impacts
