However, the conditions for executing this mission had only recently aligned. He stated, “We understood the aircraft could achieve this, and our crews were adequately prepared. While long-range flights are not uncommon for helicopters, this particular capability is notable given the extensive stretches over open water.”
Historical Context
The NH90, a European-designed platform, was selected by New Zealand’s defense leadership in 2005 to replace the aging UH-1 Iroquois helicopters. Eight units have been operational since 2015, with an additional unit serving as an auxiliary. This operational flexibility aligns with the RNZAF’s strategic goals and enhances New Zealand’s defense posture in the region.
