Navantia Launches First F-110 Frigate

Launch of Spain’s F-110-Class Frigate

Overview

On 11 September 2025, Spanish shipbuilder Navantia successfully launched Bonifaz (F-111), the inaugural vessel of the Spanish Navy’s F-110-class frigate program. The event took place at the company’s Ferrol shipyard in Galicia.

Project Details

  • Current Status: The frigate is currently over 70% complete and will continue outfitting at the shipyard, with an expected delivery date set for 2028.
  • Purpose: The F-110-class is designed to replace the aging F-80 Santa María-class frigates, enhancing the capabilities of the Spanish Navy with a versatile surface combatant.

Capabilities

The F-110 design incorporates a dual-focus operational framework:

  • Primary Mission: Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)
  • Secondary Mission: Anti-air warfare (AAW)

This advanced capability set is essential for modern maritime security operations, ensuring that the Spanish Navy can effectively address emerging threats.

Partnerships and Technology

  • Combat System Development: Navantia Sistemas serves as the combat system design agent for the F-110 program, which will feature the indigenous Sistema de Combate de los Buques de la Armada (SCOMBA) combat management system (CMS).
  • Integration with Advanced Technologies: SCOMBA will be integrated with Lockheed Martin’s AN/SPY-7(V)2 radar system and the International Aegis Fire Control Loop (IAFCL), facilitated through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract authorized by the U.S. Government.

Future Implications

The launch of Bonifaz marks a significant milestone in Spain’s naval modernization efforts, as the F-110 class will enhance maritime capabilities and readiness. The integration of advanced technologies underscores Spain’s commitment to maintaining a sophisticated and capable naval force.

The development and commissioning of these vessels signal a proactive approach to naval warfare and regional defense, bolstering Spain’s strategic posture within NATO and the broader international community.
