Naval Group Delivers First Defense and Intervention Frigate

Delivery of the Amiral Ronarc’h: A New Era for the French Navy

On 17 October 2025, Naval Group officially handed over the first Defence and Intervention Frigate (FDI), the Amiral Ronarc’h, to the French Navy via the Defence Procurement Agency (DGA). This milestone marks the initiation of a program that envisions a total of five frigates, aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities and modernization of the French fleet.

Significance of the Amiral Ronarc’h

Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “The delivery of the Amiral Ronarc’h, the inaugural vessel in the FDI series, represents a significant achievement for Naval Group. This new generation of advanced multi-role frigates is set to bolster the operational efficiency of our French Navy, validated during extensive sea trials.”

Multi-Role Combat Capabilities

The FDI represents a sophisticated evolution of the French FREMM frigate class, designed to excel in various combat scenarios, including:

  • Anti-Aircraft Warfare
  • Anti-Submarine Operations
  • Surface Combat
  • Counter-Asymmetric Threats

Equipped with state-of-the-art digital technologies, the FDI is engineered to address both present and future maritime security challenges such as advanced submarines, high-speed missiles, and cyber threats. Its versatility allows it to function autonomously or as an integral component of a naval formation, effectively managing diverse operational environments.

Design Characteristics

The Amiral Ronarc’h’s compact and unique design enhances operational adaptability across multiple maritime conditions—cold, tropical, and archipelagic environments. Recent sea trials, conducted in the Atlantic Ocean, demonstrated its resilience and performance in challenging sea states, particularly in conditions reaching up to sea state 6.

Additionally, its construction includes advanced automation systems that enable efficient operation with a reduced crew size. This design feature translates to increased maintainability, substantially minimizing downtime and enhancing mission readiness; the FDI is anticipated to mirror the French Navy’s multi-mission frigates’ impressive 80% operational availability over the past decade.

Standardization and Interoperability

Like all vessels within the program, the FDI adheres to NATO standards, ensuring seamless interoperability and effective communication with allied forces. This conformity is vital for collaborative operations across multinational maritime missions.

Efficient Production Techniques

Naval Group has adopted a leading-edge industrial process that shortens construction timelines, facilitating the production of up to two FDI frigates annually. Currently, five additional FDIs for the French and Greek Navies are under development at the Lorient facility, each at different stages of completion:

  • HS Kimon (Hellenic Navy) – under sea trials, expected delivery by late 2025
  • Subsequent units anticipated for delivery in 2026 and the next French Navy frigate slated for 2027

The construction of a single FDI involves approximately 1 million hours of labor and an equivalent amount devoted to design and development. This endeavor engages about 1,200 Naval Group employees along with 400 subcontractors, signaling substantial economic engagement within the defense sector.

Technical Specifications

  • Displacement: 4,500 tonnes
  • Length: 122 meters
  • Width: 18 meters
  • Maximum Speed: 27 knots
  • Operational Range: 45 days
  • Crew Capacity: 125 personnel + 28 passengers

The induction of the Amiral Ronarc’h sets a progressive trajectory for the French Navy, enhancing its operational capabilities while ensuring readiness for future maritime challenges. This modernization initiative not only reinforces defense readiness but also strengthens international partnerships through enhanced interoperability.
