Operational Readiness of the Merops System

Ukraine has effectively deployed the Merops counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) for more than eighteen months. In recent developments, military personnel from the United States, Poland, and Romania have engaged in training exercises utilizing this system at a training facility in southeastern Poland, as confirmed by a NATO official on November 20.

Effectiveness Against Iranian Shaheds

The Merops C-UAS comprises three primary components:

  • A ground control station
  • A pneumatic launcher
  • The AS3 Surveyor interceptor

Major Nicholas M. Chopp, the Chief of Future Operations in US Army Europe and Africa Public Affairs, noted on November 20 that the Merops system has proven exceptionally effective against the Iranian Shahed drones currently employed in the region.

  • Cost-Benefit Analysis: According to Major Chopp, the system has successfully neutralized approximately $200 million worth of Shahed UAS at an expense of roughly $15 million for the interceptors. He highlighted that the cost of a Surveyor is approximately 10% of that of a Shahed drone.

Understanding the Shahed Threat

The Iranian Shahed-136, known in Russia as the Geran-2, is engineered for extended-range missions. Variants of this UAS may feature electro-optic seekers, enhancing targeting capabilities. Additionally, the jet-powered Shahed-238, referred to as Geran-3, represents an advanced iteration within the Shahed series, further complicating counter-UAS efforts.
