MBDA and Rheinmetall Joint Venture to Develop German Naval Laser

Advancements in Naval Laser Technology: Bundeswehr Initiatives

Overview of Recent Developments

The German Bundeswehr, in collaboration with MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall, has recently concluded a series of successful tests of a Laser Weapon Demonstrator (LWD), achieving over 100 field firings across multiple target types in September 2023. This initiative underscores Germany’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities and enhancing naval operational effectiveness.

Establishment of a Joint Venture

On January 5, Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland announced intentions to form a joint venture focused on naval laser systems, set to commence in the first quarter of 2026. This partnership builds on their collaboration since 2019 and aims to innovate laser weapon technologies for the German Navy.

Key Objectives of the Joint Venture

  • Focus on Naval Applications: The joint venture’s primary goal is the development of laser systems tailored for maritime operations.
  • Operational Effectiveness: Described by Rheinmetall as an “operational laser weapon system,” these advancements are particularly geared towards effective engagement against drones (UAVs) and other maneuverable threats at short to very-short ranges.

Successful Trial Period and Field Testing

The LWD underwent a comprehensive one-year evaluation at sea, culminating in over 100 separate firing and tracking exercises. Key outcomes from this trial include:

  • Versatile Target Engagement: Tests conducted included scenarios with a ‘blue sky’ background, ensuring that laser beams were accurately directed without interference from terrestrial objects.
  • Milestone in Precision and Safety: Achievements in precision targeting and safety demonstrated the system’s potential to minimize collateral damage, underscoring its utility in diverse operational contexts.

Following this successful testing phase, the LWD was transferred to the Bundeswehr’s Laser Competence Centre, located at the Technical Centre for Weapons and Ammunition (Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 91: WTD 91) in Meppen. It has since been reactivated for further assessments, particularly focusing on land-based drone defense capabilities.

Implications for Future Naval Operations

The advancements represented by the LWD and the forthcoming joint venture signal a pivotal shift in how the Bundeswehr approaches aerial threats. As defense professionals, it is crucial to monitor these developments as they may have significant implications for naval strategy and operational readiness.
