Overview of the Partnership
Leonardo-Rheinmetall Military Vehicles (LRMV), a collaborative entity formed between Italy’s Leonardo SpA and Germany’s Rheinmetall AG, recently secured its inaugural contract. This agreement, announced on November 5, entails the delivery of 21 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) to the Italian Army.
Technical Specifications and Configuration
The contract specifies that all 21 AFVs will be constructed on Rheinmetall’s Lynx KF-41 chassis, known for its versatility and battlefield adaptability. The armaments will vary among the vehicles:
- Five units will be equipped with the Rheinmetall Lance turret, featuring a 30 mm×173 MK30-2/ABM cannon.
- Sixteen units will utilize Leonardo’s Hitfist turret, also armed with the NATO-standard 30 mm×173 cannon.
Future Upgrades and Training Systems
The agreement further involves the transition of the entire fleet to the Hitfist configuration. An option to procure an additional 30 vehicles is included, alongside advanced training and simulation systems designed to enhance crew readiness and operational effectiveness.
Timeline for Delivery
The first delivery is anticipated by the end of 2025. These vehicles will contribute to Italy’s Army Armoured Combat System (A2CS) initiative, which aims to modernize the country’s heavy armoured vehicle fleet. This program will ultimately encompass the acquisition of 1,050 AFVs, in addition to at least 132 KF-51 Panther main battle tanks (MBTs), with Panther deliveries projected between 2030 and 2040.
Strategic Implications
The procurement strategy reflects Italy’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities, responding to evolving security challenges in the region. The integration of advanced technologies and increased training for personnel signifies a proactive approach to modern warfare.
