Advancements in Unmanned System Interoperability for Maritime Operations
Toulouse, March 2, 2026
A significant advancement has emerged in the realm of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), marking a pivotal moment for maritime surveillance and inspection endeavors. DIODON has unveiled its ambitious project, Vigilansea, which aims to cultivate persistent operational capabilities for USVs and UAVs at sea. This initiative, backed by the French government under the France 2030 initiative, will proceed over the next three years, in collaboration with SeaOwl Technology Solutions and ISAE-SUPAERO.
Project Objectives and Technological Framework
Vigilansea centers on establishing two fundamental technological components:
-
Next-Generation Maritime UAV: This UAV is engineered for prolonged operations in open-water environments, significantly enhancing operational endurance.
-
UAV Station for USVs, DIODON REEF: This onboard station facilitates the deployment, recovery, recharging, and readiness of the aerial platform, allowing for continuous maritime missions without the necessity of human intervention.
To augment these efforts, a specialized USV tailored for autonomous UAV deployment at sea will be designed in partnership with ISAE-SUPAERO, which brings invaluable expertise in aerodynamic refinement and sophisticated flight control systems.
A Roadmap Based on Practical Experimentation
DIODON has long structured its expertise around the integration of hardware and software for maritime UAVs, emphasizing UAV-USV cooperation. The company’s capabilities were showcased during Dronathlon 2024, where successful command and control interfacing was achieved via onboard communication systems, including satellite connectivity embedded in the USV.
In 2025, engagement with NATO’s Task Force X Baltic further validated DIODON’s hardware integration capabilities. This included the creation of a deployment module—the DIODON LAUNCHER—which enables the launch of the DIODON HP30 maritime UAV from USVs.
Moreover, DIODON’s innovative designs for maritime UAVs effectively address a critical interoperability challenge: the ability of UAVs to endure the demanding marine environments typical of USV operations, including factors such as:
- Watertight construction
- Positive buoyancy
- Structural integrity
- Resistance to corrosion, sea spray, wind, and wave action
Enhancing Autonomous Operations in Open Water
The operational intent behind Vigilansea is unmistakable: to merge the capabilities of surface drones with aerial observation technologies, enabling continuous maritime presence. This duality not only extends maritime surveillance capabilities significantly but also automates mission execution while minimizing human risk in complex operational theaters.
By fusing autonomous deployment, recovery, on-board recharging, and real-time coordination through robust communication frameworks, Vigilansea aims to facilitate repeated mission execution without human oversight.
The UAV serves as a sophisticated remote sensor for the surface platform, enhancing surveillance capabilities from the high seas to coastal zones, thereby expediting the detection and identification of anomalous activities and bolstering overall maritime situational awareness.
Diverse Mission Applications
This integrated architecture supports a wide array of operational missions, including:
- Maritime surveillance and anti-trafficking initiatives
- Safeguarding critical coastal and offshore infrastructure
- Environmental monitoring and pollution assessment
- Maritime safety and security operations across extensive maritime domains
As Antoine Tournat, CEO and Co-founder of DIODON Drone Technology, aptly notes: “The management of maritime spaces has historically posed a central strategic challenge. Today, however, the breadth of areas requiring monitoring and the intensity of maritime activities amplify this challenge exponentially. To ensure comprehensive and sustained coverage, it is imperative to complement human resources with collaborative, integrated robotic solutions.”
This document provides a synthesized overview of the Vigilansea project, emphasizing its strategic significance and technological innovations aimed at enhancing maritime surveillance and operational resilience in increasingly complex environments.
