Jordan Confirms Acquisition of Terrahawk

Advancements in Jordan’s Air Defense: Terrahawk Deployment

Introduction

The Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) has recently integrated the Terrahawk Paladin anti-aircraft system, developed by MSI Defence Systems, into its operational framework. This development was highlighted during a recent exercise dubbed ‘Sky Shield’ conducted by the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF).

Exercise Overview

King Abdullah II observed the air defense drill on September 29, though extensive details surfaced only after the JAF released a comprehensive 16-minute video on October 14. This exercise underscored the JAF’s commitment to enhancing its air defense capabilities through modernization initiatives.

Strategic Modernization

Brigadier General Suleiman al-Humaidah, Director of the JAF’s Royal Field Air Defence, articulated the strategic imperative for the acquisition of the Terrahawk system. The implementation is part of a broader agenda to elevate the nation’s air defense framework.

  • Deployment Highlights:
    • Two Terrahawk systems were utilized during the exercise, held near the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan Training City, located east of Al-Zarqa.
    • Uniquely, the Terrahawks were operated by RJAF personnel rather than elements from the Royal Field Air Defence, which typically comprise the JAF’s ground forces.
    • The Terrahawk successfully demonstrated its operational capability by engaging and neutralizing a class one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Complementary Systems

In addition to the Terrahawks, the exercise included the Royal Field Air Defence’s existing platforms. These included:

  • ZSU-23-4 Shilka: A self-propelled anti-aircraft system well-regarded for its versatility.
  • M163 Vulcan: Another self-propelled anti-aircraft option, known for its effective suppression of aerial threats.

Terrahawk System Specifications

Unveiled in 2022, the Terrahawk represents an evolution of the MSI-DS’s Seahawk Lightweight remotely operated naval weapon platform. It features:

  • A 30 mm Mk 44 Bushmaster II cannon mounted on a NATO-compliant deployable pallet.
  • An integrated Surveillance Acquisition Targeting Optical System (SATOS) and mast-mounted FIELDctrl radars supplied by Advanced Protection Systems (APS) from Poland.

According to MSI-DS, the Terrahawk is particularly proficient against low-cost UAVs, boasting effective engagement ranges of up to 2 kilometers when utilizing advanced programmable air-bursting munitions.

Conclusion

The integration of the Terrahawk system into the RJAF’s operational capabilities reflects Jordan’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its air defense architecture. This serves to both enhance national security and adapt to evolving aerial threats within the region. The successful demonstration of the Terrahawk during the ‘Sky Shield’ exercise not only highlights its operational efficacy but also reinforces the JAF’s proactive approach to defense modernization.
