Israel Aerospace Industries Unveils Advanced LAHAT Alpha Missile
On 21 October, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) introduced the latest iteration of its Laser-Homing Anti-Tank (LAHAT) missile, designated as the LAHAT Alpha. This enhanced version boasts a range of up to 20 kilometers, effectively doubling the capability of its predecessor.
Evolution of the LAHAT Missile
Originally, the LAHAT missile was designed as a laser-guided anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) that could be fired from 105 mm rifled tank guns. The missile has since evolved to accommodate a portable version, which can be deployed from various platforms including air, sea, and land. Key specifications include:
- Standard LAHAT:
- Length: 1 meter
- Weight: 13 kilograms
- Maximum Range: 10 kilometers
- LAHAT Alpha:
- Length: 2 meters
- Weight: 25 kilograms
- Maximum Range: 20 kilometers
- Warhead Options: Capable of delivering large anti-tank or fragmentation warheads
Addressing Operational Requirements
IAI’s LAHAT Alpha is tailored to satisfy the increasing market demand for cost-effective and precise munitions. Notably, it can be launched from beyond line of sight (BLOS) and navigate to its target by utilizing airborne or ground-based laser designators. This feature is particularly advantageous, as it eliminates dependence on satellite navigation systems that are susceptible to jamming.
Guy Barlev, General Manager of IAI’s Systems, Missiles, and Space Group, articulated the strategic intent behind the LAHAT Alpha’s development:
“LAHAT Alpha was created to align with our clients’ requirements, enhancing both range and lethality of a proven missile system, in response to the global call for powerful and competitively priced munitions.”
Export Potential and Current Customers
Currently, Azerbaijan stands out as the sole confirmed international customer for the LAHAT system. Reports have noted the presence of quad launchers—albeit without missiles—mounted on the nation’s Mi-17 helicopters, as featured in media coverage from 2016.
The introduction of the LAHAT Alpha not only enhances IAI’s portfolio but also reflects broader trends in military technology towards increased precision and versatility in anti-tank warfare. This could potentially reshape operational paradigms for armed forces seeking advanced munitions solutions in an evolving battlefield landscape.
