Hellenic Navy Expands Capabilities with CAMCOPTER® S-100 UAS Procurement
Introduction of Advanced Unmanned Systems
On February 13, 2026, the Hellenic Navy formalized a contract for the acquisition of shipborne CAMCOPTER® S-100 Unmanned Air Systems (UAS), which will be integrated into its Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention (FDI) Belharra-class frigates: HS Kimon, Nearchos, and Formion.
Deployment Timeline and Training
The HS Kimon, which recently docked in Greece in January 2026, is set for the installation of the CAMCOPTER® S-100 in the spring of the same year. To enhance operational proficiency, an additional S-100 system will be stationed on land for training exercises. Initial training for Greek operators is projected to conclude by spring 2026, ensuring rapid familiarization with the new technology.
Frigate Integration Schedule
The remaining UAS units will be integrated aboard the Hellenic Navy’s Belharra-class frigates:
- HS Nearchos: Expected to enter service with the S-100 in late 2026.
- HS Formion: Anticipated to become operational with the UAS by early 2027.
These frigates have been pre-configured for the integration of the CAMCOPTER® S-100, facilitating swift installation and operational readiness.
Operational Enhancements
Equipped with:
- Wescam MX-10 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera gimbal
- An Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch sensor
The CAMCOPTER® S-100 will significantly bolster the operational spectrum of the Hellenic Navy’s frigate fleet. Key mission capabilities will include:
- Maritime security
- Search and rescue missions
- Environmental surveillance
- Control over the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
- Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
Strategic Significance
Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group, emphasized the importance of the CAMCOPTER® S-100, stating, “We are immensely proud that it is the UAS of choice for the Hellenic Navy. Its demonstrated maritime efficacy, endurance, and substantial payload capacity will empower commanders with enhanced situational awareness, ultimately strengthening the operational effectiveness of the Hellenic Navy’s surface fleet.”
Conclusion
The integration of the CAMCOPTER® S-100 into the Hellenic Navy’s operational framework represents a significant advancement in naval capabilities. This procurement not only enhances surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities but also underscores the commitment to maintaining robust maritime security and readiness.
