Greece Signs First NH90 Support Contract to Enhance Fleet Availability

Greece Finalizes National Support Contract for NH90 Helicopters

Overview of the NH90 Fleet

Greece has completed its inaugural national support contract with NHIndustries (NHI) for the NH90 helicopter fleet, which has been receiving deliveries since 2011. This agreement, valued at EUR 50 million (USD 59 million), is designed to enhance the operational readiness of Greece’s 20 NH90 helicopters over the next five years.

Terms of the Agreement

  • Contract Duration: This First Contract Follow-on Support agreement spans five years.
  • Support Services: The contract encompasses the provision of spare parts and maintenance services. NHI’s chief stakeholder, Airbus Helicopters, emphasized that this support will significantly bolster the operational availability of the NH90 fleet.

Background on the NH90 Acquisition

In August 2003, Greece ordered 20 NH90 helicopters, consisting of 16 in the Troop Transport Helicopter (TTH) configuration and four in a special operations variant. The first of these helicopters was delivered to the Hellenic Army in June 2011, and the final unit has recently completed delivery, currently undergoing final pre-acceptance assessments prior to its formal induction into service.

Addressing Operational Challenges

The announcement of the support contract coincides with remarks made by NHI President Axel Aloccio, who discussed the broader industrial framework being established in Greece. This initiative intends to rectify the operational difficulties previously encountered, which have seen nine helicopters stripped for spare components to maintain the functionality of the remaining units. As a result, these nine airframes are no longer viable for operations.

With this new support agreement and additional maintenance arrangements, NHI aims to ensure that seven of the remaining 11 non-cannibalized helicopters are operational at any given time, significantly improving fleet reliability and performance.

Strategic Implications

This national support contract is pivotal as Greece seeks to enhance its defense capabilities and operational efficiency within its military aviation sector. The steps being taken not only aim to optimize NH90 operations but also reflect Greece’s broader commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure and addressing past challenges.

By establishing a comprehensive support system, Greece can enhance its military readiness and operational performance, critical components in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

Through such contracts and strategic partnerships, Greece fortifies its position and operational capabilities within NATO, ensuring it meets both national defense needs and international obligations.
