Germany Expands H145M Light Combat Helicopter Fleet
Commitment to Enhanced Military Capabilities
On December 15, 2025, Germany announced its decision to order an additional 20 H145M light combat helicopters (Leichter Kampfhubschrauber, LKH), which is part of an existing contract initiated in December 2023. This order increases the total procurement to 82 helicopters, emphasizing Germany’s commitment to bolstering its aerial capabilities.
Stefan Thomé, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Germany, remarked, “We are honored that Germany recognized the H145M’s exceptional performance. This order signifies a robust endorsement of our multi-role capabilities.”
Key Delivery Milestones
The inaugural H145M helicopter was delivered to Germany in November 2024, just under a year following the contract signing. Subsequent units have also been provided. The H145M is designed for diverse missions, including:
- Training
- Reconnaissance
- Special forces operations
- Light attack operations
The German Army will ultimately operate 72 units while the Luftwaffe’s special operations unit is slated to receive ten.
Versatile Design and Mission Profiles
The H145M serves as a multi-role military helicopter capable of rapid reconfiguration. Key features include:
- Transition from light attack configurations, which incorporate axial ballistic and guided munitions alongside an advanced self-protection system.
- Adaptability to special operations setups equipped for fast rappelling.
Mission packages encompass hoisting capabilities and external cargo operations, making the helicopter a valuable asset in various constructs.
Proven Performance
The H145M is the military variant of the established H145 helicopter, which has amassed over eight million flight hours across the global fleet. This platform is employed by military and law enforcement agencies for demanding operations worldwide. The Bundeswehr currently uses H145 helicopters for special operations and search and rescue missions, while the US Army integrates nearly 500 H145 variants, known as the UH-72 Lakota, with over 1.5 million flight hours logged. Notable recent acquisitions of the H145 include:
- Belgium: 17 units
- Brunei: 6 units
- Ireland: 4 units
Advanced Technology and Design Features
The H145M is powered by dual Safran Arriel 2E engines featuring Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). It is also equipped with the Helionix digital avionics suite, which encompasses innovative flight data management and a high-performance four-axis autopilot—significantly reducing the workload for pilots during missions. Additionally, its low acoustic signature positions the H145M as the quietest helicopter within its category.
The decision to expand the H145M fleet highlights Germany’s determination to enhance its military readiness and operational flexibility, ensuring effective responses to contemporary security challenges.
