Fincantieri Launches First Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel for the Italian Navy

Launch of the Offshore Patrol Vessel “Ugolino Vivaldi”: A Milestone for Italy’s Naval Capabilities

On February 21, 2026, the Italian naval landscape welcomed a significant advancement with the launch of the next-generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) “Ugolino Vivaldi” at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso. This vessel is the first of four units commissioned for the Italian Navy, aligning with a broader initiative orchestrated by Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a joint venture predominantly held by Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%), under the auspices of the Naval Armaments Directorate.

Key Participants in the Ceremony

The launch ceremony featured prominent figures in the defense and maritime sectors, including:

  • Vice Admiral Fabio Gregori: Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy.
  • Massimiliano Nannini: Chief of Staff of the Liguria Region, representing the regional president.
  • Francesco Solinas: Mayor of Sestri Levante.
  • Giovanni Sorrentino: CEO of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali.
  • Attilio Dapelo: Operations Director, Naval Vessels Division at Fincantieri.
  • Antonio Quintano: Director of the Integrated Riva Trigoso-Muggiano Shipyard.

A notable highlight was the presence of Alessandra Marsigli Cavriani, the vessel’s godmother, who is the granddaughter of Lieutenant Commander Alessandro Cavriani, recognized posthumously with the Gold Medal of Military Valor for his sacrifice during World War II.

Technical Specifications and Innovations

The “Ugolino Vivaldi” spans approximately 95 meters and has a displacement of around 2,400 tons, with accommodations for 93 crew members. The vessel exemplifies a fusion of cutting-edge technology and operational excellence. Key features include:

  • Integrated Naval Cockpit: A notable advancement, developed collaboratively by Fincantieri NexTech and Leonardo, which enhances operational control significantly. This cockpit allows a crew of only two operators—the pilot and co-pilot—to manage:

    • Engine functions
    • Rudder operations
    • Platform systems
    • Some combat system capabilities

This innovation not only streamlines operations but enhances safety and efficiency throughout various maritime operations.

Operational Role and Strategic Importance

The OPV program addresses critical requirements, enabling the Italian Navy to meet diverse operational demands, including:

  • Sustaining maritime presence and surveillance.
  • Conducting maritime patrols and controlling merchant traffic.
  • Safeguarding communication lines and the territorial waters of the exclusive economic zone.
  • Responding effectively to environmental threats such as toxic spills.

This initiative underscores Fincantieri’s dedication to fortifying its stature as a premier global entity in naval defense, represented through the FCX product family, which encompasses these advanced patrol vessels. Moreover, the program reinforces Fincantieri’s strategic partnership with the Italian Navy, paving the way for enhanced national maritime security and international collaboration.

The launching of the “Ugolino Vivaldi” signifies a pivotal moment in Italy’s naval capabilities, heralding a future where technological innovation meets operational readiness, crucial for navigating the complexities of contemporary maritime challenges.
