Croatia Orders 18 CAESAR® 6×6 MkII and 15 Serval Armored Vehicles

Croatia Enhances Artillery Capabilities with CAESAR® System Acquisition

On December 8, Croatia formalized a significant military procurement, acquiring 18 CAESAR® 6×6 MkII artillery systems and 15 Serval 4×4 armored vehicles. This strategic decision, made during the visit of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to Paris, underscores Croatia’s commitment to modernizing its defense forces.

Key Events of the Signing Ceremony

The acquisition was initiated at the KNDS site in Satory, with prominent figures in attendance including Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anušić, French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin, and Jean-Paul Alary, CEO of KNDS. Subsequent ceremonies took place at the Élysée Palace, graced by the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Plenković.

Strategic Framework of the Acquisition

This procurement forms part of a collaborative procurement framework established by the French government through the General Procurement Agency (DGA). European funding, allocated under the SAFE initiative, plays a critical role in financing this contract, allowing Croatia to leverage approximately €1.7 billion for this enhancement of its military capabilities.

Modernized Artillery Systems

The CAESAR® 6×6 MkII represents an advanced iteration of the 155 mm/52-caliber gun system. Croatia’s decision to procure this artillery system follows its assessment of the CAESAR®’s successful performance in various operational theaters, such as Afghanistan and Mali. The acquisition aims to establish a second artillery regiment equipped with wheeled systems, complementing existing units utilizing the PzH 2000.

Contract Specifications

The signed agreement encompasses two primary components:

  • 18 CAESAR® MkII Systems: Mounted on ARQUUS chassis, these systems will be outfitted with the ATLAS artillery fire control system and advanced Thales radios, proven in numerous challenging deployments.
  • Comprehensive Regimental Capability: This package includes radar systems, ATLAS system components, Thales communication equipment, optronic binoculars, logistics vehicles, and 15 Serval armored vehicles from the SCORPION family designed for command posts and reconnaissance teams.

Strengthening European Defense Dynamics

This contract is indicative of enhanced cooperation in European defense, arising from the joint procurement mechanism enabled by France. This collaborative model allows the DGA to act as a purchaser on behalf of partner nations, promoting best practices within the European defense industry. Croatia’s alignment with this initiative places it among other nations, including Estonia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Portugal, that have opted for the CAESAR® system.

CAESAR®: A NATO Artillery Benchmark

Fully realized at KNDS’s Roanne facility, the CAESAR® 6×6 MkII epitomizes a new generation in artillery systems, offering several critical advantages:

  • Increased Protection: Enhanced armored cabin provides improved resilience against mines and IEDs.
  • Superior Mobility: Updated engine specifications promote greater operational agility.
  • Sophisticated Digital Architecture: This ensures strong interoperability, cybersecurity, and seamless integration with command and control systems such as ATLAS and Thales communication solutions.
  • High Operational Rate: Capable of firing six rounds per minute at ranges up to 40 km, it combines speed with precision.

Future Prospects and Community Integration

This order not only solidifies Franco-Croatian defense ties but also contributes to the establishment of a robust European defense industrial base. Moreover, Croatia’s inclusion in the CAESAR® Users Club signifies its commitment to leveraging proven military technologies.

Jean-Paul Alary, CEO of KNDS, expressed gratitude during the signing, noting, “We appreciate Croatia’s trust. The selection of the CAESAR® and Serval validates the effectiveness of KNDS solutions in addressing contemporary operational requirements and reflects the vitality of defense collaboration in Europe.”

This acquisition marks a pivotal development in Croatia’s military modernization efforts and exemplifies the ongoing evolution of defense partnerships across Europe.
