China Commissions Fujian Aircraft Carrier

China’s Newest Aircraft Carrier: The Fujian

China has officially introduced its third and most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian (CV-18), during a commissioning ceremony on Hainan Island. This development marks a significant milestone in the expansion and modernization of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

Key Features

  • Advanced Technology: The Fujian is notably distinguished as the largest operational aircraft carrier within the PLAN. It is the first to implement an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), enhancing its operational capabilities and allowing for the launch of a diverse array of naval aircraft.

  • Commissioning Timeline: Laid down in 2016 and launched in 2022, the carrier has successfully completed at least nine sea trials beginning in May 2024. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) made the formal announcement regarding the commissioning on November 7, following the ceremony on November 5.

Air Wing Composition

The aviation component of the Fujian is projected to comprise approximately 40 fixed-wing aircraft, supplemented by helicopters. This diverse air wing enhances the carrier’s versatility in various operational contexts.

  • Showcased Aircraft: At the commissioning event, four specific aircraft were displayed on the carrier’s deck:
    • Shenyang J-35: A fifth-generation naval fighter currently lacking a formal naval designation.
    • Shenyang J-15T: A fourth-generation combat aircraft.
    • Xi’an KJ-600: Designed to conduct airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) operations.
    • Hongdu Z-20J: A medium multirole naval helicopter.

Operational Milestones

The J-35 naval variant, along with the J-15T and KJ-600, successfully executed their inaugural flight operations from the Fujian earlier in 2025. This development underscores the carrier’s readiness to support advanced combat operations and enhances its strategic value within the region.

Future Prospects

The configurations and types of aircraft highlighted during the commissioning ceremony suggest a potential air wing composed primarily of the aforementioned platforms. Additionally, the integration of the J-15DT electronic warfare (EW) fighter is anticipated, further elevating the Fujian‘s combat capabilities.

In summary, the commissioning of the Fujian represents a pivotal advancement in China’s naval capabilities, exemplifying the nation’s commitment to modernization and the development of a formidable maritime force. The strategic implications of this acquisition will be critical for regional security dynamics and naval power projection in the years to come.
