Boeing Enhances Polish F-15EX Proposal with Local Partnerships and ‘Ghost Bat’ Initiative

Poland’s Fighter Jet Acquisition: Boeing’s Strategic Bid

Introduction

The Polish Ministry of National Defence is actively pursuing a procurement initiative to acquire up to 32 advanced fighter aircraft. Boeing has positioned its F-15EX as a frontrunner in this competition, touting its capabilities in air superiority, payload efficiency, operational range, and flight velocity.

Boeing’s Industrial Cooperation Initiative

To enhance the appeal of its F-15EX offering, Boeing is introducing a robust industrial collaboration package aimed at strengthening Poland’s defense industrial base. This initiative also includes the introduction of the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, a sophisticated loyal wingman drone designed to complement existing capabilities.

Engagement with Local Industry

Boeing representatives have engaged with Polish industry stakeholders to explore collaborative opportunities surrounding the F-15EX program. The recent Boeing Industry Day held in Warsaw on October 29 served as a platform for these discussions, extending beyond the fighter jet to encompass other military platforms, such as the KC-46 tanker aircraft.

  • Networking: Meetings with potential partners have focused on areas including manufacturing, services, research and development, as well as maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations.
  • Pre-existing Collaborations: Boeing already possesses several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with various Polish companies and is establishing partnerships with local academic institutions to foster innovation and skill development in defense-related fields.

Focus on MRO Capabilities

According to Marissa Myers, a senior manager overseeing business development at Boeing, Poland’s existing MRO capabilities are well-suited to the needs of the F-15EX program. The intention is to expand these capabilities through additional local partnerships to ensure a sustainable and mutually beneficial collaboration.

Exploring Advanced Drone Technology

Initial dialogues have commenced between Boeing and Polish authorities regarding the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, hailed as the “most advanced and mature collaborative combat aircraft in the marketplace.”

Competing Options for Poland

While the F-15EX is a primary candidate, Poland’s options also include procuring 32 additional fifth-generation aircraft, which would complement its ongoing acquisition of 32 F-35s. Furthermore, the Polish military is evaluating alternatives, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, manufactured by a consortium including Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.

Recent Contracts and Future Engagements

Boeing has ramped up its efforts to solidify its market position within Poland following significant contracts, including a landmark deal in 2024 to deliver 96 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters—totaling approximately $10 billion. This contract includes essential munitions and equipment, further fortifying Poland’s military capabilities. Additionally, a $300 million agreement was established earlier this year for the lease of eight AH-64D Apaches from the United States to support interim operational needs.

Conclusion

Boeing’s strategic initiatives in Poland reflect a comprehensive approach to not only sell cutting-edge military hardware but also foster long-term industrial partnerships that benefit both the U.S. and Polish defense sectors. As the procurement process unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor how these developments impact regional security dynamics and defense collaboration within Europe.
