U.S. Army Expands Capabilities with New Loitering Munitions Order
The U.S. Army is set to bolster its capabilities with a significant procurement of advanced autonomous systems, specifically kamikaze drones and armored-piercing variants known as “tank killers.” This development follows a recent delivery order worth $186 million from AeroVironment Inc.
Overview of the Switchblade Family
The agreement encompasses two distinct versions of AeroVironment’s Switchblade series of loitering munitions:
- Switchblade 600 Block 2
- Switchblade 300 Block 20
Characteristics of Loitering Munitions
Loitering munitions represent a sophisticated hybrid of first-person view (FPV) drones and precision-guided missiles. Commonly referred to as “kamikaze” or one-way attack drones, these systems can autonomously identify and linger over targets, allowing for precise targeting and detonation on command.
Switchblade 600 Block 2
The Switchblade 600 Block 2 is a product of joint efforts with U.S. Special Operations Command, designed for deployment in diverse and challenging environments, including maritime scenarios. Key features include:
- Advanced Artificial Intelligence: This capability enables rapid target detection and engagement.
- Versatility: Suitable for various operational theaters, enhancing the Army’s adaptive response to threats.
Switchblade 300 Block 20
The Switchblade 300 Block 20 serves as a “tank killer,” capable of targeting threats at extended ranges beyond the operator’s line of sight. Notably, the Army has included an Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) payload in this variant for the first time:
- Enhanced Penetration: The EFP warhead is specifically designed to deliver increased lethality against armored vehicles.
- Compact and Mobile: This system’s size makes it manageable for small unit operations, allowing for easy transportation, even in a backpack.
Previous Testing and Validation
The 1st Cavalry Division conducted operational trials of the Switchblade 600 system at Fort Hood last October, affirming its integration into the Army’s tactical arsenal.
Strategic Implications
Brian Young, Senior Vice President of Loitering Munitions at AeroVironment, remarked that this delivery order underscores the Army’s confidence in evolving the Switchblade systems. He noted:
- Modern Warfare Relevance: The adaptability of these loitering munitions aligns with the demands of contemporary, contested battlefields.
- Manufacturing Expansion: AeroVironment is committed to enhancing production capabilities and expediting delivery timelines to meet increasing demands from U.S. and allied forces.
This strategic acquisition not only enhances the Army’s operational readiness but also reflects a broader trend towards integrating advanced unmanned systems into conventional military strategies. The evolving nature of warfare demands rapid innovation, and the U.S. Army appears poised to leverage these cutting-edge technologies in its future engagements.
