The U.S. Army’s artillery community is exploring innovative applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize military operations, particularly in missile targeting. Maj. Gen. Frank Lozano, head of the Program Executive Office Missiles and Space, emphasized the importance of advancing these capabilities during his remarks at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
“The enemy is never going to engage us in a way that aligns with our expectations or strategic plans,” Lozano explained.
The Role of AI in Targeting and Engagement
Lozano highlighted the transformative potential of AI tools designed to map enemy positions and assess their intended battlefield maneuvers. An effective AI-driven tool would empower the Army to:
- Rapidly Identify Targets: Enable quicker target prosecution using AI-enhanced fire control systems.
- Minimize Manpower Requirements: Allow for reduced personnel demands in engagement operations.
Challenges with Human-AI Interaction
As the Army integrates AI into operational frameworks, one critical challenge will be ensuring that human decision-makers remain informed about battlefield developments, particularly when ongoing surveillance relies on AI systems.
Col. Charles Kean, who leads the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, cautioned about the importance of maintaining a human element in these processes.
“In the near term, we continue to await full technological integration. It’s vital for a human operator to either remain engaged in the decision loop or be adaptable to incoming data,” Kean stated.

Maj. Gen. Lozano articulated a vision for the future where:
