Aselsan Göksur Air-Defense System Successfully Intercepts Sea-Skimming Target for the First Time

Aselsan’s Göksur Air-Defense System Achieves Milestone Interception

Aselsan, the prominent Turkish defense firm, has announced a significant advancement in its defense technology with the successful interception of a sea-skimming target utilizing the Göksur air-defense system. This milestone was revealed in a press release dated October 7, following the live firing trial conducted on October 4, 2025.

Test Details

During this critical evaluation, a Göksur imaging infrared missile (IIR), equipped with a sophisticated high-resolution infrared seeker, was launched from a Göksur 100-N Vertical Launch System (VLS) stationed at the Sinop test range along Türkiye’s northern Black Sea coast. The missile was directed using Aselsan’s Güdü datalink for its mid-course trajectory, proceeding to autonomously lock onto its target in the terminal phase. Notably, the missile achieved a direct hit, destroying its target effectively at a range of 11 kilometers.

Advanced Features and Development Background

The Göksur system integrates an advanced infrared seeker designed by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (SAGE), enhancing its capabilities against various aerial threats.

Key Features of the Göksur Air-Defense System:

  • Long-range interception of sea-skimming threats such as anti-ship and cruise missiles.
  • Operational effectiveness against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and combat aircraft.
  • Improvement of shipboard missile-defensive frameworks, reinforcing naval deterrence and self-defense capabilities.

Aselsan emphasizes that this system is pivotal in modernizing maritime defense architectures, strengthening Türkiye’s defense posture along with its allied forces.

Strategic Implications

Ahmet Akyol, President and CEO of Aselsan, stated, “Türkiye has reached a new milestone in its naval defense capability. This achievement not only enhances our deterrence and defense but also highlights Aselsan’s commitment to creating indigenous systems that bolster the operational superiority of our armed forces.”

This successful test marks a crucial development in Türkiye’s efforts to enhance its naval defense capabilities, indicating an ongoing commitment to indigenous defense innovation.
