EOS to Provide Remote Weapon Station for Australia’s Redback IFVs

Contract Award for Remote Weapon Stations Enhancing Australian Defense Capabilities

Introduction to the Acquisition

Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA) has finalized a significant contract amounting to AUD 108 million (approximately USD 71.4 million) with Canberra-based Electro Optic Systems (EOS). This agreement focuses on the procurement of an advanced remote weapon station (RWS) for the Redback infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) designated for the Australian Army.

Details of the Redback IFVs Program

The procurement of 129 Redback IFVs is part of the Department of Defence’s (DoD) Land 400 Phase 3 initiative, which carries an overall budget of AUD 7 billion. This robust program aims to enhance the operational readiness and capabilities of the Australian Army.

Enhanced Features of the R400 Remote Weapon Station

On October 6, EOS confirmed the delivery of an upgraded version of its R400 RWS for the Redback vehicles. Key attributes of the R400 include:

  • Weight and Armament: The system weighs less than 400 kg and possesses firepower up to 30 mm.
  • Sensor Capabilities:
    • Available in both 3-axis and 4-axis configurations.
    • Equipped with a day camera and a thermal imaging unit.
    • Day camera detection range exceeds 12,000 meters, with recognition and identification capabilities reaching 5,600 meters and 4,700 meters, respectively.
    • Thermal imaging allows for detection beyond 13,700 meters, with recognition and identification ranges at 5,100 meters and 4,000 meters.

These capabilities significantly enhance situational awareness and combat effectiveness.

Historical Context and Previous Collaborations

EOS has a proven track record with the Australian Defence Force, having supplied the R400 RWS for the Bushmaster 4×4 protected mobility vehicles and the R400S-Mk2 RWS for the Boxer 8×8 armoured fighting vehicles. The deployment of the enhanced R400 RWS further solidifies EOS’s commitment to supporting the Australian Army’s modernization efforts.

Manufacturing Commitment

The advanced R400 RWS will be fabricated at EOS’s facility in Canberra, ensuring local expertise and job creation within the defense sector.

At the time of publication, EOS had not provided additional details regarding the contract or operational deployment timelines.

This contract represents a strategic enhancement to the Australian Army’s capabilities, aligning with broader defense objectives to maintain a technologically advanced and responsive military force.
