Integration of Buria RWS on THeMIS UGVs for Ukraine’s Defense
Overview of Developments
On 12 August 2025, Milrem Robotics announced a significant advancement in Ukraine’s defense capabilities: the integration of the Buria Remote Weapon Station (RWS) featuring a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher onto the THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). This initiative, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s warfare technology, was highlighted during an international media visit to Milrem’s facilities in Tallinn on 22 September 2025.
Upcoming Deliveries and Existing Inventory
Milrem is set to deliver over 100 THeMIS UGVs to Ukrainian forces, beginning at the close of 2025. These units will complement the 15 THeMIS UGVs financed by Germany that are currently deployed in Ukraine. The existing UGVs primarily serve in logistics and support functions, including ammunition transport and engineering tasks, as noted by Colonel Paul Clayton (retired), the director of industrial partnerships at Milrem.
Local Integration and Customization
According to Colonel Clayton, Ukrainian defense technology providers will be responsible for outfitting the new UGVs. This approach builds on prior contributions from the UK as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence in Estonia and Poland during 2019-2021. A notable example is the THeMIS equipped with the Buria RWS, which was developed in collaboration with Ukrainian firm Frontline.
Operational Challenges and Tactical Considerations
Colonel Clayton stated that Russia has placed a financial incentive for capturing THeMIS UGVs, having successfully taken possession of one UGV, albeit stripped of its functional equipment due to combat action. This highlights the strategic importance of the THeMIS system and the need for enhanced security and resilience in the field.
Enhancements in Deployment
In response to operational demands, additional armor and communication systems will be applied to both the forthcoming THeMIS UGVs and existing units in Ukraine. This retrofitting aims to provide improved survivability and operational effectiveness in a challenging combat environment.
Implications for Future Operations
The integration of sophisticated weapon systems like the Buria RWS onto the THeMIS UGV represents a pivotal enhancement in Ukraine’s military capabilities. As these technologies are adapted and deployed, they will likely play a crucial role in adapting military strategies and operational tactics in the ongoing conflict landscape.
