The current request for proposals (RFP) specifically seeks at least 45 medium-sized tactical trucks, designated to replace the aging Mercedes-Benz Unimog fleet, which has been operational for over four decades.

Technical Specifications and Operational Roles

The NZDF seeks vehicles classified as Medium Class 2 for comprehensive functions, including:

• Cargo and Personnel Movement: These trucks must be capable of traversing both formed and unformed road surfaces.
• Versatility in Use: The vehicles are intended for daily training operations and for transporting personnel and equipment between military bases.

Notably, these trucks will remain within New Zealand, focusing on domestic applications, including search-and-rescue missions and disaster relief efforts. Sarah Minson, the deputy secretary for capability delivery, emphasized their integral role in bolstering operational readiness.

Timeline and Future Planning

This procurement effort falls under the second phase of the GATS initiative, with funding sanctioned by the 2025 defense budget. Specifications, as well as project timelines, are expected to be refined following final Cabinet approval of the business case.
