In 2021, Cummings Aerospace strategically selected a location adjacent to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama—an epicenter for Army aviation program management and testing. This choice facilitated a direct collaboration with defense programs and streamlined access to vital testing and development resources. The facility was specifically designed to enhance production capabilities, allowing Cummings Aerospace to manufacture large quantities of the Hellhound drones efficiently.

Manufacturing Readiness Level Achievement

Cummings expressed her enthusiasm regarding the company’s progress, noting that the team has reached Manufacturing Readiness Level 7. This designation signifies a well-defined production workflow within the facility, alongside established work instructions for the construction of air vehicles. The Hellhound is a remarkable loitering munition, weighing less than 25 pounds. The company recently completed flight tests on its turbo-jet-powered kamikaze drone, refining the S3 version of the Hellhound in preparation for the U.S. Army’s Low Altitude Stalking and Striking Ordnance (LASSO) competition, set to commence later this year. This competitive landscape requires the creation of 135 munitions in total, with an initial batch of 35 prototypes.

With ambitions set high, Cummings aims to produce at least 100 air vehicles monthly from the Huntsville facility. While acknowledging that payload variations will influence production volume, she envisions scalability through collaboration with the supplier base and continued expansions.
