South Korea Advances Air Defense with Long-Range Missile Systems

Contract Awarded to Hanwha Aerospace

The Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea has entered into a significant procurement agreement with Hanwha Aerospace to supply a series of long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM) launchers and anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs) for the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA). This contract is valued at KRW 705 billion (approximately USD 479 million) and aims for delivery by 2030.

Advanced Technology Features

The L-SAM system is an integral component of South Korea’s layered air and missile defense framework. Notably, Hanwha Aerospace emphasizes that the missile employs cutting-edge technologies, including:

  • Divert and Attitude Control System (DACS): This system enhances the precision of interception by allowing for fine adjustments during the missile’s flight.
  • Dual-Pulse Propulsion System: This innovative propulsion mechanism facilitates effective engagement of ballistic threats at high altitudes, where conventional aerodynamic controls may falter.

As articulated by Hanwha Aerospace, these technological advancements significantly improve the system’s capability to counteract high-altitude ballistic missiles.

Previous Contracts and Sensor Integration

This recent contract follows a separate agreement finalized in October, wherein Hanwha Systems secured KRW 357.3 billion to provide multiple units of L-SAM multifunction radars (MFRs) to the RoKA. The MFRs will serve as critical sensors for the L-SAM, enabling the detection of incoming aerial threats such as ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft.

Specifications and Capabilities of the L-SAM

Initial conceptual designs of the L-SAM were unveiled by the Ministry of National Defense (MND) in 2020. Key capabilities include:

  • Interceptor Range: The system is designed to launch two distinct types of interceptor missiles, each with an operational range of approximately 150 kilometers.
  • Missile Types:
    • An anti-aircraft missile featuring a dual-pulse solid-propellant rocket motor.
    • A sophisticated two-stage interceptor specifically engineered for multilayered missile defense, capable of targeting missiles at altitudes ranging from 40 kilometers to 100 kilometers.

This layered approach is essential for enhancing South Korea’s defensive posture in an increasingly volatile regional security environment.
